QB Reads is a niche sports technology startup focused on training American football quarterbacks through simulation-based learning. Founded and run as a solo venture, the business offers a mobile app that enables players to practice decision-making in realistic game scenarios using both 2D and virtual reality environments.

The company is based in the United States and serves a growing international audience, including users in Europe and Latin America. Its primary users are high school and aspiring athletes, along with coaches looking for accessible training tools.

Quick facts

  • Self-hosted Mautic instance on a private server
  • Integrated across website (WordPress) and mobile app
  • Tracks user behaviour across platforms
  • Uses point-based scoring to identify high-value users
  • Segments users into players and coaches
  • Powers targeted email and in-app engagement
  • Supports a global user base across multiple countries

Background

Quarterback training traditionally requires full team participation, making it difficult for players to practice decision-making independently. QB Reads was built to solve this problem by offering simulation-based training that can be accessed anytime through a mobile device.

As the product developed, the need for a flexible and cost-effective marketing automation system became clear. As a solo founder without access to large budgets or teams, Andy needed a platform that could combine multiple functions such as email marketing, user tracking, segmentation, and automation without requiring multiple tools or high subscription costs.

Having previously used Mautic, they chose it again for its flexibility, scalability, and ability to deliver enterprise-level features without financial barriers.

Aims

The project aimed to address several key challenges:

  • High cost of traditional marketing automation platforms
  • Fragmented tools for email, CRM, and user tracking
  • Limited visibility into user behaviour across app and website
  • Difficulty identifying and targeting high-intent users
  • Need for scalable marketing without increasing operational costs

Outcomes

By implementing Mautic as a self-hosted solution, QB Reads built a fully integrated marketing system that supports both its website and mobile app.

Mautic enabled:

  • Real-time tracking of user behaviour across platforms
  • Point-based scoring to identify highly engaged users
  • Segmentation of audiences such as players and coaches
  • Targeted email campaigns and personalized messaging
  • Trigger-based engagement, including upgrade prompts for active users

This approach allowed the business to move away from disconnected tools and instead operate from a single, unified system.

As a result, QB Reads gained clear visibility into how users interact with the product, allowing them to make more informed decisions about engagement and monetization. The system also revealed unexpected global traction, with users joining from countries such as Germany, Brazil, and Mexico.

Most importantly, Mautic enabled the entire marketing operation to be managed independently, without the need for external funding or expensive software.
