In my experience leading the Mautic project, some of the most rewarding moments come when we can build on community-driven ideas that have been years in the making. Today is one of those moments.
I’m delighted to share that Phase 2 of our Campaign Portability project has been awarded funding from NLnet Foundation and the European Commission through the NGI0 Commons Fund. This continues the work we began with Phase 1, which has been progressing excellently and is on track for deployment with Mautic 7.0 this summer.
From foundation to reality
Back in 2018, our community started discussing the need for campaign templates and import/export functionality. What began as a forum thread has evolved into a strategic initiative that will fundamentally change how marketers use Mautic.
Phase 1 laid the groundwork by creating the technical infrastructure to import and export campaigns and their associated resources. Our developer and project manager have done exceptional work not only in building robust tooling but also in engaging meaningfully with our community throughout the process.
What Phase 2 will deliver
Building on that foundation, Phase 2 will create the user-facing Campaign Library that brings this functionality to life. Here’s what we’re building:
Campaign publishers will be able to:
- Create a campaign bundle and submit it for inclusion to the Campaign Library
 - Offer campaign bundles for free – and at a later date in phase three (or within this project as a stretch goal) with a cost which will include a percentage revenue share with the Mautic project
 - Publish updates to the campaigns with new versions
 - Review and address results from automated security and privacy screening before publication

Marketers will be able to:
- Browse and search campaigns by industry, type, and purpose
 - Decide to optionally and anonymously send aggregated statistics about the campaign’s performance back to Mautic, to be shown in the campaign library which helps users understand how successful they are
 - View detailed information about each campaign’s function and impact
 - Install campaigns as seamlessly as possible into your own Mautic instance
 - Discover popular and successful campaign configurations
 - Receive updates about new relevant campaigns
 - Review and rate campaign bundles

This functionality positions Mautic as a genuine open source alternative to proprietary platforms like Marketo, Salesforce, and HubSpot. Leading tools like ActiveCampaign offer similar features with their ‘recipes’, and we’re bringing this capability to the open source marketing automation space.
What this means for Mautic
This project connects directly to our mission of digital independence. By lowering the onboarding curve for marketers who may be new to marketing automation and making it quicker for experienced marketers to get up and running with the most common campaigns, we’re making it easier for organisations to choose open source solutions over proprietary platforms.
The Campaign Library will also serve as an educational resource, helping users understand best practices for compliance, data protection, and workflow management. In a landscape where marketing technology can feel overwhelming, this provides practical guidance embedded directly into the platform.
Furthermore, the underlying technology and interface that we’re building for the Campaign Library won’t only be used in that context, it will also be built on the foundations for the front-end interface to our Mautic Marketplace which allows the managing of plugins and themes as well.
The team and timeline
For Phase 2, we’re bringing on board a new project manager (part time) and a senior developer to work on the project full-time, and also working with a UX/UI designer who will work with us on several sprint cycles to ensure the interfaces and user experiences created are intuitive and accessible. Job descriptions and details are listed on our jobs board.
The project will run for approximately five months (22 weeks) across 11 two-week sprints. We’re aiming to align this functionality with the Mautic 8.0 release, which represents a significant milestone for the platform.
Technical considerations and security
One aspect I want to highlight is our commitment to supply chain security. We’re building automated screening processes to check campaigns for security and privacy issues before publication, alongside ongoing monitoring of published campaigns. If vulnerabilities are identified, we can quarantine content immediately and provide clear guidance to affected users.
This proactive approach to safeguarding reflects our values around both innovation and responsibility. Digital independence means nothing if the tools we provide aren’t secure and trustworthy.
Community involvement
As with Phase 1, we’ll be using the Debates feature on our Community Portal to have open discussions about the project’s development, and we’ll be posting regular sprint reviews there so you can keep track of what we’re working on and the status of the project. The UX/UI Tiger Team and Product Team are already aligned with this initiative, and we have testers and documentation writers ready to contribute, but we’re always open for offers of help!
What excites me most is seeing how this project has evolved through genuine community collaboration. From that initial forum post in 2018, through Phase 1’s technical foundation, to now building the interface that will make this accessible to thousands of Mautic users – it’s a testament to what we can achieve when we work together.
What happens next
Over the last few weeks we’ve been finalising project plans, conducting discovery work, and defining detailed requirements. We’ll keep the community updated throughout, with regular sprint updates and opportunities for feedback.
If you’re interested in contributing – whether through testing, documentation, feedback, or simply following along – join the discussion on our Community Portal. This is our project, built by our community, for our community.
I’m curious to hear which types of campaign templates you’d most like to see in the library when it launches. What would make the biggest difference to your work with Mautic?
